Happy Friday MCS Community!

Let’s talk about Homework.

For many of us it is a new concept that children are not expected to bring schoolwork home with them.  Many of us grew up with hours of tasks to complete at home, and we have memories of sitting at the kitchen table working on our homework, maybe with a parent standing over our shoulder.  Some of us wonder if we are doing enough at home to teach our children math if we are not using flashcards and workbooks every evening.  Here is something that is very beautiful about Montessori:  “homework” is “home work.”  What that means is the complimentary work you can be doing at home is what you are actually already doing at home, but doing it WITH your kids.

Here are some examples of “Home Work” for ALL ages, from the ever-wise Ms. Carole:

  • Cook together – measure ingredients, read recipes, study foods
  • Fold laundry together – count and match socks, sort colors
  • Clean together
  • Garden together
  • Tell them stories about your life

If it seems overly simple, it is.

Community News

Looking for a cool extracurricular activity for the kids ages 2.5+?  Check out the Healthy Kids Running Series – a 6 week Sunday morning race for kids of all ages.  Held at Key West High School track over 6 weeks, it’s a great way to expose your child to a sport with minimal investment and minimal pressure.  Lots of our community families take part, and we always enjoy seeing each other on Sunday morning to cheer and laugh and play outside.  The last week even incorporates a “Parent Mile” so you can walk the walk by showing your children that being healthy is fun at all ages.  Here’s the link to sign up:  HKRS Sign Ups

Weekly Miracle Makers

Oftentimes it feels like our school is powered by Miracles.  Miracles large and small happen each week to pull off all that we do here.  Those miracles appear in acts of love and kindness and service by parents, children, staff, alumni, community members, and more, and each week we highlight a special one here.

This week’s Miracle Maker is Susan from The Breakfast Club, Too who donated a 10lb bag of freshly roasted coffee beans to us for our Upper Elementary Coffee Shop, debuting at tomorrow’s ABC Wash!  Come buy yourself some cold brew coffee and Goldman’s bagels (thanks to Ms. Ashley & Ms. Desiree) at the ABC Wash.
