February Gumbo Limbo News

“Following some inner guide, they occupied themselves in work, different for each other, it gave them joy and peace, and then something else appeared that they had never known among children, a spontaneous discipline”.
Maria Montessori

Dear Gumbo Limbo Families,

It’s been a busy month. The children were excited to finish the model volcano and couldn’t wait to explode it! We experimented with baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring, first measuring and then adding the ingredients to the volcano. It created an oozing, frothing lava – it was a blast! They enjoyed this so much we have already had requests to repeat the experiment, which we will be doing in the very near future.

Our beach basket for the fundraising event was unbelievable! Thank you so much for supporting this cause with your generous donations. The basket was filled to the brim with amazing items. The evening was so much fun – from the music to the comedy. I laughed till my belly ached. We could not have done this without you.

Thank you Gumbo Limbo Families for all your support this month, also for the steady healthy snacks, oranges and apples supplied for our food prep lessons.

Topic of the month: Concentration

Concentration is focusing attention on a specific task for an uninterrupted length of time. Often concentration occurs with an individual, but concentration can also happen when a group of children are working together. The full 3-hour work cycle is an important aspect to the Montessori environment as children can work for long periods of time in real, purposeful activity under the correct conditions. Interrupting the child when he/she is involved and focused is disrespectful and should be avoided.

Our unit study for the month is our Solar system and Space, If you have any books, pictures, photos, magazines or articles on the subject and would like to share please bring it in. It will be well-looked after.

Peace and Love,

Ms.Nicole and Ms.Pascale
