Pre-Primary Program Curriculum
The Curriculum for our pre-primary program ages 18 months - 3 years old reflects the belief that each child is respected as unique. With this in mind, we apply appropriate methods of guidance based on human development and observation. This approach will provide opportunities for your child to explore, experiment and play, developing at his or her own pace. The curriculum will include developmentally appropriate activities in the following areas:
- Grace & Courtesy
- Practical Life
- Sensorial
- Language
- Pre Math
- Science
- Music & Movement
- Geography
- Art
Grace & Courtesy
Grace and courtesy will be encouraged from the moment your child walks in the door and will consistently be reintroduced throughout the time they are with us. Courtesy is learning to show respect and concern for themselves, others and their environment. Grace is quality of body movement or self-control. These are skills children will use their whole lives, in many different ways.
Practical Life
Practical Life is the most important area in a Montessori environment. The activities in practical life will prepare the child for daily living experiences involving care of self, others and the environment. Its primary aim is to aid in sense of order, independence, coordination, and increased concentration through completing a precise task. Completing what they started helps to build self-confidence and self-worth. By instilling these concepts at an early age, we set the stage for self-motivated learners.
Introduction to Sensorial
Children of this age group obtain a wealth of information through sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Exploration using senses along with descriptive language heightens the awareness of the environment.
Language
Children acquire language through active participation using all of their senses: hearing, seeing, feeling and doing. Building listening skills, following directions and then actually doing, enables the toddlers to understand the function of language. Expressive descriptive language is used through all areas of the curriculum.
Introduction to Math
Having materials available for pre-primary students to manipulate, add to and take-away from provides concrete experience that will one day aid in the basic function of moving to abstract applications.
Science
Science is so much fun for our pre-primary students! Hands-on experience and self-discovery in a rich, varied environment cultivate a child’s curiosity and determination. They are able to discover things themselves, which is an integral part of Montessori learning.
Music & Movement
Every day your child will have lots of fun singing and dancing to age appropriate songs. Music is an excellent tool for building language and movement (fine and gross motor skills). Fun for all! Freedom of movement is integral to the Montessori Method and enhances the growth of the mind, body and spirit.
Geography
Geography in the Montessori environment is based on studying whole cultures. For our pre-primary age group it is a bit simpler. We will explore different animals, people and landforms. Lots of puzzles and discovery!
Art
Artwork builds imagination; self esteem, gross and fine motor skills and language! There will always be art materials available for self-expression. With lots of love and a prepared environment, the children will be part of a positive, enriching, and stable learning environment. Here they will grow and learn at an unhurried, productive pace. We look forward to this journey with your child.
